BBB Presents 16 Cents as Eastern Washington Torch Award Winner

Better Business Bureau Northwest and Pacific is proud to announce 16 Cents, 3 Shoes and 5 socks as the recipient of the 2018 Torch Award for Ethics for Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho.  The Torch Award for Ethics honors businesses and charities that demonstrate excellence in their dedication to high standards of trust, integrity and ethical business practices in the marketplace.  For more than 100 years Better Business Bureau has been helping people find businesses, brand and charities they can trust.  In Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho there were over 80 submissions for the 2018 Torch Awards for Ethics.

The story of 16 cents, 3 shoes and 5 socks is one of inspiration and commitment our community by giving back to those that need help the most.  The owner, Jason McSteen, had lost everything and walked into the Union Gospel Mission in Spokane on December 1, 2012 with nothing in his pockets but 16 cents, 3 shoes and 5 socks.  From that day, and with the encouragement from others and immense support from the community, Jason grew what he had left into the business we have today.

“Five years ago, I started this business in a garage,” states Jason McSteen, “Because of the hard work of our staff and loyal customers, we now have three stores in Spokane and are glad to be part of the furniture and mattress retail industry in Spokane.  We really focus on and are proud to give back, to give second chances and to make a difference in the community.”

Their contributions to the community can be seen every day and consistently are on the lookout for opportunities to help.  Each year, they participate in the R.O.A.R Walk for Recovery, established a hardship donation program for those less fortunate who may not be able to finance and host a “Crazy Campout” each year to gather donations of warm winter clothes for the homeless.  Their contributions to the community, emphasis on trust and integrity made them the judge’s unanimous choice and who have been an accredited business with Better Business Bureau since 2015.

“The Torch Awards embodies the ideals of trust, integrity and ethics,” says President and CEO Tyler Andrew. “These are the businesses that make our communities such great places to live.”
